Festival of Perth: January 18th

On this day is held the Austrailian Festival of Perth, a day sacred to the Aborigine mother goddess, Nungeena,  a benevolent guardian spirit who restored beauty to the world after an evil spirit nearly destroyed by hordes of insects.

According to legend, when the evil spirit, Marmoo, let insects loose upon the world to destroy it, Nungeena created the birds to eat all of the insects. They were, however, not just any birds, but the beautiful Lyre Birds of Australia. In turn, the Lyre Birds then created assistants, such as the magpies to help with their sacred task.  Together they saved the beautiful plants and flowers of the world, thus renewing the world's beauty.
